This season’s weather has been remarkable to say the least and the fall colors are already fading away. The cold weather and holidays are just around the corner so the time has come to get your home ready for the winter, if you haven’t done so already. Take a walk around your house and look at its general condition. If any part of your house doesn’t appear in good condition, it could very likely cause a problem later in the winter. Look for damage or cracks on the siding, windows and doors. Inspect the areas that exchange or exhaust air such as dryer vents and air exchanger ports. Cleaning or repairing these areas can increase the efficiency of your home and keep heating costs down. Speaking of heating, it is a good time to run your furnace and replace the filter. Make sure the heat is being delivered around your house before it gets cold and you actually need it!

It is also a good time to think about winterizing your outdoor equipment as well. Not only will it preserve your tools, but it will increase your home’s safety when you get a handle on the flammable liquids in your garage.

Finally, it is worth your time to inspect any areas in your home that are easily accessible to small furry four legged creatures. They are looking for a warm place to live for the winter and it’s time well spent to prevent them from coming in your home than trying to kick them out after they’ve moved in to your home.

Ice dams were a big issue last winter and we received several calls to help our clients with them. Occasionally the ice dams can be taken care of by melting them away. That is fine as long as they don’t keep coming back, but when they keep showing up, it usually means there is an issue with your roof insulation system. Coming up towards the end of the month, we are going to be solving this problem for a client by removing the affected area of their roof and insulating it correctly. In addition we will be slightly modifying the roof structure to help keep snow and ice from building up in the first place.
